# How Filter Setups Changed in World AeroPress Championship Recipes

Documented World AeroPress Championship podium filters shifted from one-layer dominance to a mixed one- and two-filter landscape. In 2009–2015, 16 of 19 available recipes state one filter, none state two, and 3 omit the count. In 2016–2019, the split is 6 single, 4 double, and 2 missing; in 2021–2025, it is 8 single and 7 double with no missing counts. That is a chronology, not evidence that two filters taste better or improve placement: material, placement order, fit, rinsing, cap, pressure, and the rest of the recipe also change.

Scope: The historical source indexes 49 podium positions and exposes 46 recipes from 2009–2025; 41 have a documented filter count and 5 do not. There was no 2020 championship. This page does not infer a count from generic filter wording and does not pool the separate audited 25-of-66 2025 finalist sample into the podium timeline.

## Key definitions

### Filter count
The number of filter elements explicitly documented in the archived recipe. Count is kept missing when the wording does not support a number.

### Filter material
The source-supported medium, such as paper, paper plus metal, or cotton plus linen. A material label does not establish thickness, porosity, fit, or resistance.

### Filter cap
The component holding the filter against the brewer. This page uses the official name AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap when the archived recipe states it.

### Preparation
Rinsing, soaking, trimming, stacking order, and fit. These actions are not reconstructed when the archive records count but leaves preparation incomplete.

## Filter count is the most consistent coordinate, not the whole setup

Across 46 available podium recipes, count is usable in n=41: 30 one-filter records and 11 two-filter records.

That partition answers a narrow question: how many filter elements the archived recipe states. It does not make all single-filter recipes equivalent or all double-filter recipes equivalent. A standard paper disc, a named paper cut to fit, paper paired with metal, and a textile stack can share the same numeric count while behaving and fitting differently.

The 5 missing counts remain missing. Three occur in the early period and two in 2016. A generic phrase such as “the filter” may suggest singular grammar, but Brew Supply does not convert grammar into a normalized count when the source record does not clearly support it. That restraint prevents a cleaner-looking timeline from becoming a less faithful one.

The practical consequence is simple: use the count map to locate records, then read the complete recipe before recreating a system. The surrounding method determines whether a filter is dry or rinsed, standard or modified, paired with an accessory, used during a single press or part of a multi-stage sequence, and matched to a particular output target.

## 2009–2015 is a one-filter archive with three documentation gaps

The early period contains 19 available recipes: 16 state one filter, 0 state two, and 3 do not support a count.

The visible pattern is strong but should be described precisely. Every early recipe with a normalized count records one filter. That does not prove every competitor at those championships used one layer, because this archive covers available podium recipes rather than all competitors, and three available podium records still have no supported count.

Material documentation is also thinner than modern recipe wording. Many records simply say paper; some say only that the filter was wet, soaked, or pre-wet; others do not state material. A layer-count timeline can therefore be more complete than a material or preparation timeline without contradiction. Each field needs its own evidence boundary.

Early methods range from upright drip–immersion hybrids to inverted brews, recirculation, partial presses, and selective serving. A single paper layer inside those systems does not make filtration the only stable variable. It is better read as a common documented component across otherwise heterogeneous recipes.

## 2016–2019 introduces double layers and two paper-plus-metal records

Among 12 available recipes, 6 state one filter, 4 state two, and 2 leave count unresolved.

This is the first working period in the normalized podium archive where two-filter systems appear. The change coincides with concentrate-style recipes, higher doses, bypass, and tightly engineered workflows, but coincidence is not a mechanism. The archive was not a controlled experiment that held coffee, grind, water, agitation, press, and service constant while changing only a filter layer.

Two records—2017 third place and 2019 second place—explicitly combine paper and metal. They count as two filter elements, but they should not be grouped uncritically with two-paper stacks. Material order can matter operationally, and a reusable metal element differs from another paper layer in construction and cleanup. The timeline therefore shows count while the material note preserves the exception.

Named paper also enters the surviving descriptions. Aesir appears in 2019, while other named or modified papers appear later. Product naming is retained only where the source states it; the page does not infer equivalence between named papers and the manufacturer’s standard AeroPress paper micro-filters.

## 2021–2025 has complete count coverage and an almost even split

All 15 modern podium recipes support a count: 8 use one filter and 7 use two.

The modern period is easier to map because count is no longer missing, not because the systems become uniform. It includes classic paper, Aesir paper, Cafec paper modified to fit, generic paper, and a cotton-plus-linen stack. Some filters are rinsed, some are dry, and the written preparation is not equally detailed in every record.

The 2023 third-place recipe is the archive's single cotton-plus-linen record. Its two elements accompany a two-stage extraction with two water temperatures and two press phases. Calling it merely a “double-filter recipe” would erase the most important structural difference; the material and sequence explain why count alone is a weak proxy for method.

The modern near-even split describes the podium archive. It does not show a progression from basic to advanced, a replacement of one layer by two, or a placement advantage. One-filter recipes still occupy podium positions throughout the period, including winners, while two-filter recipes appear across placements.

## The hardware timeline stays intentionally short

Only 2 historical podium records explicitly name the AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap: 2025 first and third place.

The archive supports an observation date, not a product-launch history. Brew Supply can say that the accessory appears in those two 2025 podium recipes because the source wording names it. This page does not infer when the product first became available, how many other competitors used it, or whether earlier cap wording always meant the standard Filter Cap.

Official AeroPress guidance says the AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap still requires a paper or metal filter. That is why the accessory is recorded as hardware alongside, rather than instead of, filter count and material. The 2025 winner used it with two paper filters; third place used it with one classic paper filter.

Those two podium observations do not establish an advantage. They belong to complete recipes with different orientation, dose handling, grind preparation, water architecture, pressing, and bypass. The restrained conclusion is simply that explicitly named flow-control hardware enters this podium timeline in the available 2025 records.

## Six details prevent count from becoming a false comparison

A filter system is only comparable when count, material, order, fit, preparation, and cap context are all sufficiently specified.

First, one paper is not a standardized resistance value. Paper products and lots can differ, and the archive sometimes names a product while sometimes saying only paper. Second, two filters can mean paper plus paper, paper plus metal, or two textiles. Third, a filter may be trimmed or modified to fit, as the 2024 Cafec example explicitly was.

Fourth, preparation varies: rinsed, dry, soaked, pre-wet, or unstated. Fifth, placement order matters for mixed-material stacks but is not always normalized. Sixth, cap choice changes pressure and drip behavior; it must remain a separate field from the medium itself. A page that reduces all six to 1 versus 2 would create precision without comparability.

The archive also cannot explain sensory causality. Podium selection reflects a cup produced by a whole recipe under competition conditions. There are no repeated controlled brews assigning the same coffee and method to random filter systems, and most historical competitors outside the podium are absent from this dataset.

## The audited 2025 finalist sample answers a different question

The separate 2025 study covers 25 available recipes from 66 official finalists; 23 systems are resolved and 2 are missing.

Within the resolved sample, 13 are single-paper, 8 are double-paper, and 2 are paper-plus-metal. The AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap appears in 3 of all 25 available recipes. These denominators describe sampled finalists from one same-coffee season, not the multi-year podium archive.

Only 3 placements are known in that sample. The other records are rank-unknown, so filter prevalence cannot be converted into a success rate or compared between winners and non-winners. Pooling the sample with historical podiums would also duplicate the 2025 top three and overweight one year.

The two datasets can sit beside each other because they provide different context. The historical timeline shows how available podium documentation changes across editions. The 2025 report shows diversity within a broader but incomplete finalist sample under one competition frame. Neither is a filter-performance trial.

## Use the timeline to find a recipe; use a controlled test to choose a setup

A useful transfer begins with the question you are trying to answer, not the most frequent historical count.

For a faithful rebrew, open the exact podium record and copy filter count, material, order, cap, preparation, orientation, dose, grind, water, agitation, press endpoint, bypass, cooling, and service. If your paper or accessory differs, label the brew as an adaptation and avoid attributing the resulting cup to the original competitor.

For a practical choice, begin with the championship-filter guide. Hold the full recipe stable and compare one filter-system change at a time. Repeat each setup, log drawdown or press resistance, grams out, clarity, texture, and taste, and stop if a modified filter fits poorly or creates an unsafe workflow.

Brew Supply's judgment is that filter count is a navigation tool. The historical map makes the emergence of double layers visible and points to unusual systems worth reading. It does not replace product instructions, a fit check, or a controlled brew on your own coffee and equipment.
