    AeroPress Championship Filter Systems

    Championship recipes do not point to one best AeroPress filter. In the audited 2025 sample, 21 of 23 filter systems were resolved: 11 used one paper layer, 8 used two paper layers, and 2 combined paper with metal; 2 systems were missing. Flow Control caps and boosters must be counted separately from filter material. Use these records to design one-variable tests, not to infer that more layers or podium use makes a setup superior.

    Scope: The 2025 audit covers 23 available recipes from 66 finalists, with only 3 known placements. The separate 2009–2025 archive contains 46 available podium recipes and documents filter count for 41; it answers chronology, not the 2025 finalist denominator. Neither source measures pore size, pressure, extraction yield, standardized sensory outcomes, or the causal effect of a filter system.

    Filter count is only one coordinate in the system

    Saying a recipe used 'two filters' leaves out the information needed to understand or reproduce the filtration workflow.

    Two identical paper discs, one paper plus one metal disc, and one paper supported by a booster are three different systems even if someone casually calls each a double-filter setup. Paper type, diameter, thickness, orientation, layer order, wetting, seating, cap geometry, and any valve or support component can change assembly and pressing behavior. The grind, dose, agitation, contact time, and press endpoint then determine what reaches that system.

    The audited 2025 field is unusually useful because its normalized records preserve filter configuration, resolved-versus-missing status, Flow Control use, and booster use as separate fields. That prevents a cap or support component from being miscounted as another paper layer. It also prevents two missing configurations from silently entering a percentage as though they were ordinary single-paper recipes.

    Brew Supply's practical rule is to copy a filter setup only after you can name every layer and piece of hardware in the liquid path. If the source merely says 'double filter,' treat it as incomplete. Build a safe, compatible local baseline and test the missing detail rather than filling it in from a different champion's recipe.

    The 2025 audit contains three resolved layer families

    21 systems are resolved: 11 one-paper, 8 two-paper, and 2 paper-plus-metal configurations.

    The single-paper family includes standard, Aesir, Sibarist Fast, and Sibarist B3 wording, sometimes paired with a booster or Flow Control cap. The double-paper family includes standard papers and named specialist papers, again with different cap and support contexts. The mixed family contains two records where paper and metal both appear. Those labels are descriptive groupings for this page, not claims that every paper inside a group has the same permeability or cup effect.

    The two missing records remain visible, so the resolved-system denominator is 21, not 23. For the whole-sample question 'Was Flow Control named?', the denominator is 23 because the cap field was coded for every record. For the question 'Was a booster part of the resolved filter system?', the denominator is 21. Denominators change because the evidence question changes.

    The three known podium recipes are examples rather than a ranking study. Némo Pop used a Flow Control cap with two standard papers, Jan Ahrend used two standard papers without Flow Control, and Dharun Vyas used a Flow Control cap with one classic paper. All three systems were embedded in different orientation, grind, water, timing, agitation, and service architectures. Filter count cannot be isolated from those complete recipes.

    Flow Control and boosters are hardware overlays

    Flow Control appeared in 3/23 audited recipes; boosters appeared in 6/21 resolved filter systems.

    Two of the 3 known podium recipes used Flow Control, while one of 20 rank-unknown recipes did. That concentration is notable but unstable: the other 20 recipes are not confirmed non-podium placements, the sample is small, and every recipe changed many variables at once. The correct conclusion is that Flow Control was part of three documented systems—not that it increased the chance of placing.

    AeroPress says the Flow Control cap still needs a supported filter and can be used with paper, metal, or both. The cap controls when liquid begins to pass; it does not replace the filtering layer. A recipe using Flow Control plus one paper therefore belongs in the one-paper family and also carries a separate cap flag.

    The same separation applies to boosters. Six resolved 2025 systems named one, but the audit does not standardize booster design, measure resistance, or run paired brews with and without the part. A booster should be treated as named hardware whose fit, assembly, and effect must be verified locally—not as a generic extra filter or performance shortcut.

    The historical archive shows adoption, not a universal winner

    Filter count is documented for 41 of 46 available podium recipes in the separate 2009–2025 archive.

    In 2009–2015, 16 of 19 available recipes documented one filter and none documented two; 3 lacked a count. In 2016–2019, the archive contains 6 single-filter, 4 double-filter, and 2 missing records. In 2021–2025, all 15 available podium recipes state a count: 8 single and 7 double.

    Across the complete archive, 30 recipes state one filter and 11 state two. Material history is less uniform: two podium records mix paper and metal, one 2023 record uses cotton plus linen, and several records name only a generic filter or omit material. A chronological rise in double-filter documentation does not establish that two layers are better; equipment availability, recipe style, paper products, rules, and reporting detail all changed over time.

    This archive must stay separate from the 2025 finalist audit. The historical rows are podium recipes across many years, coffees, rulesets, and documentation standards. The 2025 sample is a same-final set with 23 available recipes and only three known placements. Adding them together would duplicate the 2025 podium and create a denominator that answers neither a same-year prevalence question nor a clean historical one.

    Material gives a direction, not a guaranteed cup

    Manufacturer guidance distinguishes paper and metal by what they tend to retain, but a championship stack still needs recipe-specific testing.

    AeroPress describes paper micro-filters as retaining more oils and fine particles for a smoother, grit-free profile, while its stainless steel filter allows more oils and fines through for greater body. That is a useful starting distinction. It is not a promise that any named competition paper will produce the same clarity, or that adding metal to paper will land halfway between two single-material cups.

    Layering changes more than material. A second paper can change resistance, seating, and the force or time needed to finish a press. A specialist paper may differ from a standard disc. Rinsing can affect handling and fit. A cap can alter drip-through before pressing. Grind distribution and fines removal can interact with all of them. The page therefore stops short of assigning a universal taste result to one-versus-two papers.

    General size compatibility, replacement purchasing, and a broad paper-versus-metal tradeoff belong on their own future guides. This page owns a narrower decision: how to read a competition filter record without flattening its material, hardware, preparation, evidence, and recipe context into one number.

    Test one layer or hardware change at a time

    A useful home test makes the filter system the question and holds the rest of the recipe steady enough to interpret the result.

    Write the full baseline first: AeroPress model, cap, each filter layer in order, paper or metal product, rinse and seating procedure, booster or other support, coffee, dose, grind, water, temperature, agitation, contact schedule, press start, press duration, endpoint, output, bypass, final mass, and tasting temperature. If the baseline cannot be rebuilt, the comparison cannot distinguish a filter effect from execution drift.

    Brew the baseline twice. Record pre-press drip-through, seal or seating problems, press resistance, press time, visible sediment, output, cleanup, and the cup after both brews reach a comparable temperature. Then change one thing: one paper to two, paper-only to a supported paper-plus-metal stack, the cap, or the booster. Repeat twice before deciding whether the change is useful.

    Keep the simpler system unless the more complex one produces a repeatable benefit that matters for the target cup and remains comfortable to assemble and press. A competition recipe is a source of hypotheses, not an obligation to accumulate parts. AeroTemper can standardize a gentle filter-wetting and seating workflow during testing, but it does not turn one to three papers into equivalent systems or guarantee a sensory result.

    • Name every layer, its order, and the exact cap or support hardware.
    • Keep grind, water, timing, agitation, endpoint, and service fixed.
    • Repeat the baseline and the changed system at least once.
    • Log handling and press behavior alongside taste and sediment.
    • Reject a setup that is unstable, incompatible, or needlessly complex.

    What filters do AeroPress champions use?

    There is no single championship filter. The audited 2025 sample has 21 resolved systems: 11 one-paper, 8 two-paper, and 2 paper-plus-metal setups, with 2 missing. Cap and booster hardware are separate fields.

    Is one or two AeroPress paper filters better?
